ASYLUM SEEKER / REFUGEE SUPPORT
BARRIERS TO LEARNING ENGLISH FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS
Lack of access to ESOL classes; childcare issues; no previous education – the Practise Your English book and videos can help people who otherwise struggle to access education.
ASYLUM HOTEL PROJECT
We received funding from LDS charities to print and distribute translated copies of ‘Welcome to the UK’ and ‘Practise Your English’ to residents from 5 Leicestershire hotels in 13 languages, distributing a total of 1200 books.
We are now working with the EM Strategic Migration Partnership, SERCO and LDS charities to roll this programme out across the East Midlands.
This project is designed to be scaled/replicated in other regions, working in partnership with local authorities, SMPs and housing providers.
BUILDING CAPACITY – THIRD SECTOR ORGANISATIONS
Without volunteers, where would we be as a country?
Nationally we are relying on an army of volunteers and poorly resourced community organisations to help bridge the ESOL provision gap.
We offer online and live CPD to help upskill volunteers both in language and literacy teaching for second language speakers.
We also offer multi-language book bundles for organisations to use with the people they support.
FEEDBACK FROM ASYLUM HOTEL PILOT: STAFF / VOLUNTEERS
“These are sentences that will be used over and over again – they are what English speakers use all the time. Absolutely would recommend the resources and have done so to PARCA. They received them with much excitement and gratitude. The books are extremely easy to use and people can learn at their own pace.”
“The learners now have a tool to access vital information that will help them prepare while they wait for ESOL classes to be available.”
“Increased confidence Is a benefit that will help them to move successfully from an asylum seeker through the process of becoming a contributing member of this new community they hope to be a part of.”
FEEDBACK FROM ASYLUM HOTEL PILOT: RESIDENTS
“I am surprised that you acted on your own to translate things and help me in my own language – it is all very helpful. It’s all free and available. It helps us learn how to speak better, how to pronounce the words. So good – I love it.”
“I can learn from them myself. They help me learn to understand people – everyday communication, away from the grammar rules.”
“The books are easy to read – they’re simple and easy to understand.”
